Bed Bug Removal Manhattan, NY

What Causes Bed Bugs? How Do They Get In Your Home?
Bed bugs are great at climbing into luggage or attaching themselves onto other belongings to gain access into your home. Bed bugs will latch onto clothing, suitcases and other personal items while you are on vacation, a business trip or other outing. You or a family member are often the one that carries them right through your front door. Many homeowners have unknowingly brought bed bugs into their home when purchasing used furniture from a yard sale or online. Bed bugs can hide in cushion creases on furniture to go unnoticed and while that used sofa may be the couch you needed, it came with unwanted visitors.
Signs of Bed Bugs on the Mattresses, Sheets & Furniture in Your Home
There are a handful of signs that may indicate bed bugs are already inside of your home. Bed bugs are extremely sneaky due to their size and nocturnal nature. Bed bugs are often compared to the shape and size of an apple seed; flat, round and dark in color. This appearance gives the bed bug an advantage when it comes to hiding out during the day. Bed bugs are nocturnal and will patiently await the night time when you go to sleep and they can crawl out of their hiding space, latch onto your skin and begin sucking your blood until they are engorged. They will then detach themselves and head back to their hiding space until the next feeding. Bed bugs will often leave blood stains behind on your sheets or bedding, they will also leave bite marks on your body. Another sign that bed bugs may be inside of your home is that they leave a musty foul odor behind. Bed bug casings can also be left behind in mattress creases and other areas.

Treating Bed Bugs
Although you have the option to treat your home for bed bugs, it is not recommended. You will need a professional exterminator to treat your home for bed bugs, in order for the insecticides to be applied correctly. If you spray and bed bugs are hidden, they will not go away, and your infestation problem could get worse.
Finding the bed bugs is always an issue for anyone except a professional exterminator. Bed bugs have been known to enter the home through pets, and some people believe that dogs can sniff out bed bugs. While a dog’s acute smell can find beg bugs in some cases, these pets usually give off a false positive, which is why you should always call a pest control company to inspect your property, instead of assuming you have bed bugs.
Before the treatment process can begin, you will need to prepare your home. Click on this link to view our blog that goes over the bed bug extermination prepping process.
In order to exterminate your home properly, a pest control company will need to safely and properly spray your home with EPA approved insecticide. These chemicals have been proven to kill insects on contact, when applied properly. An experienced exterminator will find the hiding areas of bed bugs, and use the insecticide to irritate the nervous system of the insects, which causes them to come out. Remember that while most chemicals kill the eggs of bed bugs, there are some that do not. You will need to constantly vacuum your home to make sure the eggs and bugs are gone after your home has been treated.
Post Bed Bug Treatment
If you have not been bitten, or you do not see blood stains on your linens, and sheds of skin in the cracks or crevices within your home, this is a good sign that the bugs are gone; however, this is not always an indicator that the bed bugs have been exterminated. To ensure that the actual bed bug treatment process was successful, a pest control company will follow up, at least two times.
The Bed Bug Treatment Process
This allows the exterminator to treat areas that they may have missed during the initial treatment. These follow-up visits are typically spread out in two-week intervals – this will vary, depending on the pest control company that you hire.
Remember that even if the extermination is complete, a pest control company cannot guarantee that the bed bugs will not return. Sometimes the primary infestation was not at your home, which could cause the pests to return if your neighbors do not deal with their infestation problem.

Bed bugs are very common these days, and they can be found in a variety of business and residential properties. You will need to call a professional pest control company to inspect your home as soon as you believe bed bugs could be present. After the inspection, you will be informed of the treatment process, as well as how to prepare for the extermination.
There are different warning signs that bed bugs could have infested your home, including:
• Bite marks on your body
• Shed skins in the areas that bed bugs are known to hide (cracks and crevices)
• Musty odors – due to the bug’s sweat glands
• Blood stains on your sheets and pillowcases
• Rusty, or dark spots, on your clothes, walls, and mattresses
Make sure you complete this checklist when prepping for bed bug extermination:
• Remove curtains from your windows, and bedding from your bed
• Empty your bedroom closets
• Empty the drawers of your nightstands, dressers, bookshelves, and other furniture in the rooms that will be treated (Store these items securely in a garbage bag)
• Empty linen closets, as well as all closets where bed bugs have been found
• Wash all of the linens in your room in hot water, with regular detergent
• If you are unable to wash your linens, place them in the dryer for at least 20 minutes (place clothes in a garbage bag – do not store them in rooms that are being treated)
• Take apart your bed frame
• Unplug electronic devices
• Remove all wall hangings, including clocks, pictures, and posters
• Move objects in the room (such as furniture), making sure furniture is at least three feet away from the walls – this gives the exterminators plenty of access once they are inside of the room
• Vacuum the rooms of your home thoroughly
• Take apart your bed frame
In order for your bed bug treatment to be successful, you will need to properly prep for the extermination. Be sure to use the checklist provided above, in addition to any tips that the pest control company gives you. If you do not, the extermination could fail, and the bed bugs will still be present in your home. Treatment cannot be performed in areas that are not properly prepared.
